Section 377 may go
A report in The Times of India (byline Vishwa Mohan) indicates the home ministry may go along with the health ministry in doing away with a law the British introduced a century and a half ago, Section 377. Section 377 criminalizes same sex activity, even in private. A New Delhi based NGO working on HIV issues, the Naz foundation, is involved in pushing the changes. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has urged the government bureaus at odds to resolve their positions and may have helped precipitate a settlement. A concern that this is the only statute to address criminal child abuse and rape involving homosexuality may lead to other laws being enacted on those issues. Time will tell.
Progress abroad may encourage the search for American justice.
