Late Nite: It’s Not “Domestic Terrorism” — It’s The “Constitutional Freedom to Blow Things Up”

It\’s only bad if the other side does it

The cognitive dissonance on display by conservatives ever since the Department of Homeland Security issued a report last week on the increase of right-wing domestic terrorism has now reached sonic boom proportions, with the usual suspects screaming about the inequity and politicization of the DHS. Mind you, the DHS report analyzing a surge in left-wing extremism issued at the end of January has apparently been disappeared. Evidence of any kind of balance shits all over conservatives’ argument that they’re yet again being victimized.

If Peter King’s statements about taking out mosques on Long Island didn’t jack up the volume, there’s always the Savagewiener… On the anniversary of homegrown terrorist attacks at Columbine and Oklahoma City, the debacle at Waco, AND Hitler’s birthday, Think Progress reports:

Last week, hate radio host Michael Savage, in conjunction with the Thomas More Law Center, filed a lawsuit against Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. They claim DHS has violated the plaintiffs’ First and Fifth Amendment rights by “attempting to chill their free speech, expressive association, and equal protection rights.”

[For those who don’t remember, Rick Santorum and Alan Keyes have sat on the advisory board of the Thomas More Law Center. ‘Nuff said.]

But wait, there’s more!

The lawsuit further claims that the Department of Homeland Security encourages law enforcement officers throughout the nation to target and report citizens to federal officials as suspicious rightwing extremists and potential terrorists because of their political beliefs.

So is Savageweiner actually claiming that he has standing, as a right wing activist, to sue the DHS for infringing his right to incite people to violence through his extreme rhetoric? And does this mean that he commiserates with Max Obuszewski, the left-wing peace activist who was improperly targeted as a terrorist by the Maryland State Police?

And then there’s Jonah Goldberg, revisionist historian, who writes about the DHS report:

The problem with it is that it makes little effort to document or demonstrate its contention that “extremist” groups are resurgent, that they are right wing or that they may be formed from the ranks of “disgruntled military veterans.” Worse, it’s very sloppy about what even qualifies someone as “extremist.” Basically, it’s fancy bureaucratese for: We’re guessing bad people will do bad things because the economy is bad and the president is black. But we have no real evidence.

Jonah then proceeds to get pantsed by the same newspaper reporting on the detention of a Marine in Boston yesterday for:

allegedly trying to slip a 9 mm gun, several hundred rounds of military ammunition and bomb-making materials onto a U.S. Airways flight, according to federal and state authorities.

Cpl. Justin W. Reed of Jacksonville, N.C., arrived on a flight from Las Vegas and was bound for Charlotte, N.C., on US Airways flight 877 yesterday morning, said Transportation Security Administration spokeswoman Ann Davis.

So much for that argument, Jonah. I guess it IS because Obama is black.

Remember: the louder they shout, the wronger they are.
