Hate Crimes Legislation Vote in the House Judiciary Committee 4/22/09

The Fundies are revving for their usual fear mongering/send money campaigns.

Here comes out the same old lies as well, Your Religious Freedom is Under Attack Garbage is going to be piled high, Hip Boots Required.  Here is a taste from TVC,

The so-called hate crimes bill will be used to lay the legal foundation and framework to investigate, prosecute and persecute pastors, business owners, Bible teachers, Sunday School teachers, youth leaders, Christian counselors, religious broadcasters and anyone else whose actions are based upon and reflect the truths found in the Bible.

I know I can say that we in the LGBT community have heard enough of this crap. I am not going to post the garbage from the rest, it is all the same.  After the flip I will share how I am going to handle it.I want to find out if my representative is buying into this BS.  Here in Colorado we have Hate Crime laws that protect LGBT people.  I plan to send my congress critter a letter regarding Hate Crime legislation.

To Congressman Coffman,

  I am aware that the House of Representatives is acting on Hate Crime legislation,    H.R. 1913.  I am also aware that opponents of the legislation, mostly religious organizations, are sending out E-mails to citizens through out the United States spreading fear using lies and deception to encourage them to call their representatives including you to request that you vote against this legislation.

 The main fear they use will be their religious freedom is at risk.  These are the same fear tactics they tried here in Colorado to try and prevent Hate Crime legislation from becoming law.  Do you know of any incident here in Colorado since Hate Crime Law took effect that anyone’s religious freedoms have been limited or silenced?  I know that I have not seen one example.  I also know that there are several other states with in the United States where Hate Crime Laws have been enacted, there isn’t any incident or example where religious freedoms have been limited or silenced.

 Here is an example of what citizens are receiving from religious organizations;

 These are false claims being made by these groups.  None of these claims have happened in states with Hate Crime laws in place.  Please have your office inform citizens who ask you to vote NO on this legislation that there is no proof of any of these things happening here in Colorado.  I have written to many of these organizations requesting them to provide any example of Hate Crime Laws limiting or silencing any religious freedoms.  If I receive any examples, I will gladly share them with you.

 I am also requesting you to be a co-sponsor on this legislation.  This legislation helps the LGBT community from being terrorized as we know there is a law against committing violent acts against a person just because they are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender.  I would also request that you co-sponsor the Uniting American Families Act.

Thank you,

 The other part of what I am doing.  I am going to have a few friends contact our congressman not only to urge our Representative to co-sponsor this legislation, but also find out if he is allowing the lies of the religious right to influence his vote. My Rep is going to have his feet held to the fire, even if he is a republican.
