Piracy Supports Terrorism
I warned my friends that I was going to write a kind of wankerish post on this, so here goes. From a news briefing today with Adm. William Gortney on the rescue of Captain Richard Phillips of the Maersk Alabama:
ADM GORTNEY: Yes Sir, yes Sir. His life was in danger because the pirates were armed with AK-47s and had small caliber pistols and they were pointing the AK-47 at the Captain.
Q: The first time something like that had happened or what?
ADM GORTNEY: They actually had shot – they shot at him earlier yesterday when he attempted to escape, jumped in the water, they actually shot in the water at him.
So I hope we can stop with all the arrrr-matey there be pirates off the Somali coast thass wild stuff. What Phillips just went through was no Pirates-of-the-Carribean ride, and his captors were not cute anachronisms. These are bandits, outlaws and thugs exploiting weak governance and conditions of instability. I don’t mean to be a killjoy, but there’s been a decidedly lighthearted reaction to the Maersk Alabama ordeal, as if it were YouTube prank material.
