Electronic Medical Records – Pros and Cons

Last Night on PBS’ NewsHour, Ray Suarez hosted an interesting and thoughtful discussion centering on electronic medical records, pros and cons. My fear is that once our records go online, there will be no medical privacy for anyone. Our governments, employers, insurance companies, and various and sundry snoops will be accessing our medical records essentially at will — in spite of any safeguards proposed.

The starting point for this discussion were remarks President Obama made yesterday about setting up electronic military records that would follow military personnel from enlistment to grave.

Ray Suarez brought together Steve Robinson, Veterans’ For Common Sense; Dr. Deborah Peel, Patient Privacy Rights; and Dr. Donald Berwick, the CEO of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement.
