Letter Writing Campaign: Executive Order for Uniting American Families Act
With the momentum on our side, and allies like Love Exiles and Marriage Equality USA (MEUSA) working with us, Out4Immigration’s letter writing campaign this week is designed to take advanatge of the Congressional Spring Recess. We are urging everyone to contact your Representative in the House and your Senators and make a very serious request:
Ask them to contact President Obama and use their influence to urge him to sign an Executive Order that would immediately make the Uniting American Families Act (UAFA) law.
One stroke of the President’s pen would stop the gratuitous cruelty we face in trying to keep our families together here in the US. One stroke of the President’s pen would allow our brothers and sisters living in exile to return home with the person they love. One stroke of the President’s pen could give all Americans the right to live in their country with the person they love.
Here’s how: Find your Representative and Senators’ contact information online. Simply Google their name and you will find their official website.
From the website you can obtain all the contact info you need – phone, fax, local office address and email.
1) Call your Rep and Senator and ask for a meeting over the upcoming Congressional recess (4/6 – 4/17). If you get this in-person meeting, then contact Amos at email@example.com for talking points, which will include asking your Rep to ask President Obama to issue an executive order passing the UAFA.
2) Call your Rep’s office and tell them that it’s time the United States fixed this error in its immigration system that blatantly discriminates against gay and lesbian American citizens and their families.
3) Write or email your Rep and say:
Please ask President Obama for an executive order that immediately enacts the Uniting American Families Act (UAFA; H.R. 1024; S.424). Gay and lesbian Americans in same-sex binational relationships cannot sponsor their foreign partners to live with them as a family in the United States.
Rep. Jerrold Nadler [D-NY] says this is “gratuitous cruelty” on the part of our country. President Obama’s agenda on the White House website calls to “Fix the dysfunctional immigration bureaucracy and increase the number of legal immigrants to keep families together and meet the demand for jobs that employers cannot fill.”
An executive order making the Uniting American Families Act law would be an excellent first step on President Obama’s part to demonstrate his commitment to civil rights for all Americans.
