CIR may include UAFA
It appears that President Obama is living up to his campaign promise of Comprehensive Immigration Reform (CIR). Oh God, Lou Dobbs must be salavating. Along with the Hispanic community the LGBT community has a vested interest in passing Immigration Reform. The question now is, will the Uniting American Families Act (UAFA) be included in the CIR? I asked this question to a gay rights activist close to the UAFA and he, privately, replied:
We are working on it from many angles. It has a decent shot to be included in there somewhere. However, they gay issue will be the first thing to be attacked as they try to take the bill apart. Divide and conquer, until they have us fighting each other. If the Latinos, gays, blacks, and women ALL hang together we can keep it in and get a great bill. But divide and conquer is a strong tool and the right knows how to use it.
As gay people we have to hang together for immigration reform. There is a very visible crack in our community. Many gays oppose immigration. If we have gay people speaking out loudly and opposing immigration reform, then why should the Latinos fight to keep gays in the bill. If, however, gay people look united FOR immigration reform, the Latinos will fight to keep us in, because we are team players and will be demonstrating we are part of the coalition and help pass the bill.
I fear for the possibility that the bigoted component of our community (the anti immigrant, anti black, etc) will make a lot of noise and ruin it for us
Therefore, it is important to make our voices heard as well as support other immigrant rights organizations. It is important to have our familes included in the Comprehensive Immigration Reform.
IT'S NOT COMPREHENSIVE UNLESS ALL OF OUR FAMILIES ARE INCLUDED!!!
