Per Barack Obama on 1/9/09:

I was clear throughout this campaign and was clear throughout this transition that under my administration the United States does not torture …

But the problem is to prevent any recurrence of official torture, not merely to suspend it for the duration of the Obama administration.

If we were to ask a chief of police what he is doing to prevent crime, I’d be astonished if he simply promised to personally refrain from criminal activities and then changed the subject. But Obama, the nation’s highest law enforcement officer, does so every time he is asked about torture. He has all but refused to investigate, apprehend, prosecute, and punish the torturers among us. Whenever he is asked about torture, he promises not to torture and babbles nonsense about turning pages and looking forward. Such dismissals are insulting to the American people, who deserve to be better served.
