Bill Clinton, can speak wherever and whenever he wants. But here is another example of our disappointment with him, as he is scheduled to speak this Sunday and the San Diego Manchester Hyatt. This hotel has been a boycott target of LGBT Rights oranizers, because they gave $125,000 to the Yes on H8 campaign.
In addition there are Labor and Immigration groups boycotting because the owner has been forcing harsh working conditions on housekeepers there.
Yet, despite the boycott and his own admitted opposition to Prop H8– the former president is still scheduled to deliver remarks before the International Manufacturing Association this weekend.
A coalition of advocates, including Rick Jacobs (Courage Campaign), Fred Karger (Californians Against Hate), Cleve Jones (Founder of the NAMES Project/AIDS Memorial Quilt)……along with Todd Glorida (San Diego City Councilmember) and Lorena Gonzalez (Sec-Treas/CEO, San Diego Labor Council) have signed the following letter:
Dear President Clinton,
We are writing to urge you to reconsider your commitment to speak at the Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego on February’ 5,
A coalition of fabor and the gay community have been boycotting the hotel since July 2008. The hotel’s owner. Doug Manchester. contributed $125,000 in early seed money to get Proposition 8 on the ballot and eradicate marriage equality for gay and lesbian couples in California. Housekeepers at the hotel face onerous workloads and have to clean more rooms than housekeepers at other Hyatt hotels In this area.
The boycott of the Manchester Hyatt IS an ongoing labor dispute sanctioned by the California Labor Federation. AFL-CIO and the San Diego Labor Council. It is also an issue of importance to the gay community and IS supported by Equality California. San Diego Pride and others. Neither labor nor the gay community can tolerate a hotel whose profits are used to take away equal rights from gay couples and create poor working conditions for women and immigrants.
We know that you are scheduled to speak to the International Franchise Association on February 15, We respectfully ask you to move your speech to another location so you do not have to violate this boycott
We regret to have to make this request. but many other individuals and grous have joined us, and we have every reason to believe that as of right now you are still planning on speaking at the Manchester Hyatt.
The American Association of Law Schools moved its annual meetings next door to the Marriott. The San Diego County Employees Retirement Association moved its conference to the Convention Center. The San Diego Board of Realtors moved its annual dinner to the U.S. Grant Hotel.
And the Beverly Hills, Los Angeles and San Francisco Bar Associations have called on the California State Bar to relocate its meeting at the’ Manchester Hyatt later this year,
We ask that on February 15th you speak to the International Franchise Association on the right side of our boycott and on the right side of equality for the gay community and workers. Not at the Manchester Hyatt.
Please do not violate our boycott. Please do not speak at the Manchester Hyatt.
I would love to hear from Autumn, if she is in town and know of anything planned as a demonstration.
