Campaign Finance At Heart of Blagojevich Scandal

In the other day’s blog post by Katrina Vanden Heuvel at the Nation on Rod Blagojevich and the possibility that this kind of corruption is a real spur to reform, she lets Nick Nyhart of Public Campaign make the further point that

The Blagojevich example is politics at its absolute worst. We want politics to be something other than a cesspool. It sends the wrong message to the public about what politics can be about. All of our current elected officials have the opportunity now to separate themselves from the pay to play system — of private financing of campaigns — they should take it.

Thank you–Private financing of campaigns creates a CESSPOOL of those operating in bad faith on every level.

Money and power are the modern mantra–it’s understandable why those with money and power want the rest of us to think of it as the American Dream and that we have the chance to be monied and powerful too, but this mass delusion is killing us. No, you won’t be mega-rich; you won’t win the Master’s (and neither will your kid, so lay off); you won’t win the lottery; and you won’t be President (thank your lucky stars).

But YOU can call your government to the carpet. It seems though that we are only allowed to do this when those governing are unimaginably stupid and unparalleled in their hubris.

The only way we can begin to make changes is to simply not allow business as usual. We really must reform in whatever ways we can and at the most local levels if nowhere else.

Things to do:
1. Repeal the gerrymander–what the hell is that about; how ridiculously WRONG is this practice?
2. PUBLIC elections and PUBLIC campaigns–No private money. Money is not speech, kids, only those with money will make that argument–do not let them tell you otherwise.
3. Eliminate the role television plays in all elections. Candidates present white papers; candidates debate locally with only radio and print coverage. This means eliminate IMAGE politics.

What would you do?
