Ballot initiative discussion thread
It looks pretty grim on the marriage amendment front in Arizona and Florida, and California (it’s early there as the conservative counties reported early; keep fingers crossed). Autumn will have a full report soon. Some questions:
* Were these results inevitable? In Arizona, the language was crafted to affect only same-sex couples, so what can we gather from this outcome — that a good number of straight people cannot be moved to respect fairness under the law if they aren’t affected?
* Was it about being outspent? Outnumbered on the ground?
* And passage of the amendment in Arkansas banning gay and lesbian couples from adopting — well, that’s just sad. Apparently voters in that state would rather have children remain in group homes and without a loving family than be adopted by a same-sex couple.
Are there any recourses other than waiting for this to make it to the U.S. Supreme Court?
