Marriage is a CIVIL RIGHT….
This is LTE I got posted in local paper…. got furious with all the articles trying to tie Religion to Prop 8…let alone all the Mormon money!! and Papa Ratzi…well that is just all about head tithing so forget whatever he says.
America was founded by men and women escaping from religious persecution and domination in Europe. Our forefathers were wise enough to respect these ideals. Our Federal Declaration of Independence and the California State Constitution uphold these values, and the ‘self-evident truth,’ ‘that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.’ The blessings and responsibilities of the state of matrimony are included in these Civil rights, and we all benefit from the full and equal rights and duties of families created by matrimony. Our California Supreme Court has responsibly interpreted this right to apply equally to all,
If your particular religious denomination restricts the confirmation of marriage to certain people, that is it’s right. But marriage is a Civil right, not a religious one. People may legally marry and create a family without having it confirmed by your religion, or any religion.
Please do not restrict the right of marriage by limiting it to personal religious views. Californians are a free people…with the civil freedom to marry the person of their choice. Please vote NO on Proposition 8 and keep California’s freedoms alive and equal for all.
