TPM Cafe asked me to take part in a Book Club discussion for Jane Mayer’s (excellent) The Dark Side. Jane is, in my opinion, the best national-security reporter in the country, and TPM is my old haunt, so I could hardly say no. Emily Bazelon, Scott Horton, Christopher Hitchens and Marty Lederman are all on board, so check it out all week.

Jane started out by talking about accountability, which let me sketch out the beginnings of an essay I’ve been meaning to write for weeks now. Basically, I want the first year of an Obama administration becoming a Justice Department-led witch hunt over torture, rendition and warrantless surveillance. Like, really. A witch hunt. Tie up Cheney, Bush, Addington, Yoo, Rumsfeld, Tenet and Gonzales in court. Bankrupt them financially and then deprive them of their liberty. How persuasive is my case? Let me know.

*Official soundtrack for this argument is "Someday I’ll Exact Revenge" by Max & The Marginalized, but since I used that for a recent headline, I couldn’t do so here as well. Fiddlesticks.
