I don’t usually write about stuff like this, and Christy has the perfect distillation up already, but. Rick Davis has been caught lying about his Freddie Mac money; and John McCain has been caught lying about Rick Davis’… you get the idea. First see this, from Roll Call…:

Asked in a Sunday interview with the Times and CNBC about Davis’ work for the mortgage companies, McCain said it had ended. “And my campaign manager has stopped that, has had nothing to do with it since, and I’ll be glad to have his record examined by anybody who wants to look at it,” he said.

…and then this from the New York Times:

One of the giant mortgage companies at the heart of the credit crisis paid $15,000 a month from the end of 2005 through last month to a firm owned by Senator John McCain’s campaign manager, according to two people with direct knowledge of the arrangement.

So either McCain lied or Davis lied to McCain. Either way, this is a death spiral for Davis’ role with the campaign. Up until a few weeks ago, Davis got paid by Freddie Mac simply for his proximity to McCain while the economy collapses; and then the McCain campaign covered up Davis’ involvement — a cover-up that reached baroque proportions in a blustery press call in which Steve Schmidt attacked the New York Times for having the audacity to look into the issue. McCain either gets rid of Davis today or he’s fucked. Terminally.
