Barack Obama cancelled his appearance on Saturday Night  Live, instead calling for prayers and donations for storm victims during a campaign appearance in which he said that McCain "is out of touch with the American people."

McCain’s spokesperson Tucker Bounds commented that the speech was a "new low" and implied it was not Obama’s personal decision to cancel his SNL apearance: "It says a lot about Barack Obama’s judgment that while his campaign canceled his appearance on Saturday Night Live and his running mate stayed home, Mr. Obama went ahead and delivered a series of scathing personal attacks."

McCain took Saturday off from campaigning and will be attending a NASCAR race today, Sunday, in New Hampshire, while Palin held a rally in Anchorage before setting off for her first campaign swing without Mr. McCain in Carson City  NV.

So let’s see: it’s okay for McCain to spend a day at the races where NASCAR autos burn gas at 4.5 mpg when gas prices leaped 6 cents a gallon overnight, and for  Palin to rally and fundraise during Ike. But when Obama cancels his television appearance, calls for prayers and donations, and points out that a man who can’t remember how many houses he has is out of touch with the American people he’s accused of hitting a new low?

Meamwhile, Tina Fey as Sarah Palin on SNL (above) — so good you hate to pray that the character’s run will be blissfully short.
