Here’s a big surprise: John McCain does not give education a high priority. What with wars to plan and carry out, a Bush tax cut to implement, blue prints for oil drills to sign off on, and whiny nay-sayers to discipline, who can blame him?

Says Lisa Graham Keegan, McCain adviser and former Arizona education commissioner: “Education is obviously not the issue Senator McCain spends the most time on.”

Obviously. But  it’s not that the GOP candidate has ignored issues of schooling altogether. Afterall, he was taught at the Naval Academy prior to bombing North Vietnam. (Bombing actually takes some considerable learning.)

What he does propose by way of education policy is "greater discipline." McCain wants to allocate more federal education funds to reward “high performing teachers.” He also wants to fund new on-line schools. Beyond that there doesn’t appear to be much in McCain’s head about making young Americans competitive in the 21st Century, with one important exception: A recent McCain campaign ad claims that his opponent, Barack Obama, goes overboard with sex education, supporting such lessons for kids before they can even read. Vote McCain-Palin and stop sex education for toddlers!
