NOTE FROM PAM: What about that whole sex-outside-of-marriage pious message from the right? I wish nothing but the best for Palin’s daughter and child. I would also hope that McCain/Palin think twice before deciding who and what constitutes a family before advocating for legislation that bans same-sex couples (or single people) who would adopt a child created by other teens in Miss Palin’s situation.

Barack Obama’s statement has the right tone:

I think people’s families are off limits, and people’s children are especially off limits. This shouldn’t be part of our politics, it has no relevance to governor Palin’s performance as a governor or her potential performance as a vice president. And so I would strongly urge people to back off these kinds of stories. You know my mother had me when she was 18. And how family deals with issues and teenage children that shouldn’t be the topic of our politics and I hope that anybody who is supporting me understands that is off limits.

I do feel for the poor daughter; she didn’t sign up for this. However it changes nothing about the fact that the hypocrisy of the right is exposed yet again — the goals of that movement have been to create restrictions on contraception (emergency or otherwise), insistence on abstinence-only sex education, legislation to give a fetus personhood status — all pointing to reducing the options young women in the same situation Sarah Palin’s daughter finds herself in. What about the young women without the support or resources Miss Palin has? Whatever education in the Palin household on sex and celibacy and waiting until that sacred bond of marriage simply didn’t work. But that’s life – and real life can be a messy affair, and that’s why those who say they believe in individual rights and freedom, including McCain/Palin, need to have the compassion as leaders to advocate for privacy rights — something the right wing has no interest in.

I just heard on KCBS in San Francisco that Sarah Palin’s 17 year old daughter Briston is pregnant and in her 3rd trimester.

This announcement was made because of the rumours that have been flying around on the internets over the weekend about Trig (baby #5).

ST. PAUL — The 17-year-old daughter of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is pregnant, Palin said on Monday in an announcement intended to knock down rumors by liberal bloggers that Palin faked her own pregnancy to cover up for her child.

Bristol Palin, one of Alaska Gov. Palin’s five children with her husband, Todd, is about five months pregnant and is going to keep the child and marry the father, the Palins said in a statement released by the campaign of Republican presidential candidate John McCain.

Now what?  Do we have a new Mary Cheney on our hands?  The daughter of the vice president can have sex with anyone she wants and have children but the rest of us slobs should not get any ideas.  

Only elected Republicans can judge OUR behavior; we are not allowed to pass judgment upon theirs.
