Is Repressed Homosexuality at the Core of Homophobia?
Perhaps, according to an article published in Psychiatric News by the American Psychiatric Association in September of 1996. Two groups of men were selected using a carefully constructed scale to measure homophobia. One group exhibited homophobic tendencies; The other did not. Both group’s members identified themselves as exclusively heterosexual.
The men were shown sexually explicit videos of a heterosexual couples, lesbian couples and gay male couples. The levels of arousal by the men in both groups were virtually the same in response to the heterosexual and lesbian videos.
