Apparently, Leviticus is now off the menu
The Christian Right love Leviticus; it has after all provided them with the most explicit condemnation of homosexual sex in the Bible; forget that ‘abomination’ is a mistranslation of ‘Jewish taboo’ or that a whole bunch of other things; shrimp, tattoos, earrings, come under the same strictures.
Until Barack Obama points out the same things, that is.
Suddenly, citing the ritual lunacies of Leviticus is ‘distorting the Bible’, according to that eminent merchant of heavenly indugences, James Dobson.http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/200…
“Dobson and Minnery accused Obama of wrongly equating Old Testament texts and dietary codes that no longer apply to Jesus’ teachings in the New Testament.
“I think he’s deliberately distorting the traditional understanding of the Bible to fit his own worldview, his own confused theology,” Dobson said.”
If that isn’t the most horrifically ridiculous piece of hypocrisy to come slithering out of a fundie’s mouth this season, then I don’t know what to expect. Everybody is fully aware that Exodus and Levitius provide the ONLY scriptural basis for gay-bashing outside of St Paul, who is vague at best. Jesus, as we all know, said nothing.
Dobson took aim at examples Obama cited in asking which Biblical passages should guide public policy – chapters like Leviticus, which Obama said suggests slavery is OK and eating shellfish is an abomination, or Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, “a passage that is so radical that it’s doubtful that our own Defense Department would survive its application.”
We all know that Leviticus and Exodus are rarely far from the mouths of homophobes; you never hear of The Sermon on The Mount from them…ever.
And we know that those passages CANNOT be misrepresented; they are explicit laws ‘Thou Shalt’ ‘Thou shalt not’. The Old Testament DOES condone slavery and infanticide and condemns lobster and mixed fiber clothing.
