Washington Post Ignores McCain’s FEC Violations
This is just getting ridiculous. Per C&L, Candy Crowley on CNN blasts Obama for waffling on taking public financing for the general, but makes absolutely no mention of the fact that John McCain is in violation of FEC law and has been told by FEC chairman David Mason that he can’t just withdraw from the system, as he insists on doing.
Then there’s the Washington Post today:
We praised Mr. Obama last year when he asked the Federal Election Commission to let him raise private money for the general election but later give the money back and decide to participate in the public financing system if he were able to persuade the Republican nominee to do the same. In that circumstance, Mr. Obama’s spokesman vowed, he would "aggressively pursue an agreement with the Republican nominee to preserve a publicly financed general election." Well, the Republican nominee turns out to be John McCain, who agreed way back when to Mr. Obama’s challenge. Where’s Mr. Obama’s aggressive pursuit now?
John McCain is already in the public financing system, and has exceeded the spending limits. Because the FEC has no quorum and no ability to enforce the law, McCain is just ignoring them.
How stupid would Obama have to be to enter into an agreement to abide by regulations with someone who has already shown he has no intention of honoring them?
And yet the media drumbeat continues apace.
