Ken Hutcherson Tries to Intimidate School Librarian

Ken “we will discipline you and kick you out” Hutcherson is back in the news today.  This time, for threatening to get a high school librarian fired.

Mount Si [High School] librarian Elaine Harger said she had received an e-mail from Rev. Ken Hutcherson that referred to Mount Si’s Gay-Straight Alliance as a “sex club” and asked if Harger wanted to be added to the list of Mount Si teachers he was pushing to have fired.

“What had I done to justify that he would try to get me fired from my job? This is intimidation, pure and simple,” said Harger.

Recall that Hutcherson spoke at the school’s MLK, Jr. Day assembly in January. He was booed during his speech by one teacher and questioned by another about his active opposition to LGBT equal rights. Neither of these people were the librarian Harger.  However,

she had exchanged e-mails with members of the Coalition to Defend Education (CoDE) who accused her of pushing political agendas on children.

CoDE is a local group trying to wipe all positive mention of LGBT human beings from the schools.  But they’re not anti-LGBT, oh nooo.  They just do things like oppose the Day of Silence and, obviously, sic Rev. Intimidation on public servants.

Harger said her e-mail had been forwarded to Hutcherson, who did not return a call from the Valley Record by press time.

Maybe he’s too depressed to respond, what with the Mount Si principal Randy Taylor and Superintendent Joel Aune defending the Day of Silence and all.

Taylor said organizers were working to set expectations of respect for all students – participants and non-participants – on the Day of Silence, which is part of a nationwide effort to raise awareness of gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans-gendered and questioning (LGBTQ) students and allies who do not feel safe enough to speak their true voice.

“The Day of Silence is just one [of many school activities] that sends a powerful message that all students are respected and have the right to learn regardless of the label they wear at school, at home or in the community. We are a better school because of activities like the Day of Silence,” Taylor said….

[Superintendent] Aune said that participating in the Day of Silence is within students’ right to free expression, and that “any form of bullying will not be tolerated.”

Ya hear that Ken Hutcherson?  Let me repeat Superintendent Aune’s words one more time: “ANY FORM OF BULLYING WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.”  It’s like rock, paper, scissors isn’t it?  Who gets the upper hand in discipline, the school Superintendent and Principal, or a blowhard preacher from another county?
