Video of Sen. Jim Webb explaining the importance of the Webb Amendment.
The cloture vote on the Habeas Restoration amendment is scheduled for 10:30 am ET this morning. Please take some time and call your Senators and encourage them to vote for cloture on S.Amend.2202. 60 votes are needed for cloture to stop a GOP filibuster — thanks, Huckleberry Graham — so every call made this morning is important. I’ll put call information and Senators who are targeted for being wobbly and/or noncommittal at the end of this post.
But I wanted to ask for another specific call this morning from our Virginia readers: John Warner needs to hear from you. The Webb Amendment (see the above video) is very close to passage as well. Mark Kleiman has a great synopsis as to why this is important — our troops are exhausted, and stretched beyond decent limits (H/T to nitpicker for e-mailing me this) in terms of repeated length of service in a battlefield zone. C&L has even more. What Webb is asking is that the DOD do what, as Scarecrow noted yesterday, the DOD has done in the past and is supposed to be doing now: take care of its soldiers by rotating them on a more even schedule.
Why does John Warner need to hear from you? Because he may be going back on his word to vote for the Webb Amendment. That is seriously pissing me off. Digby breaks down the manipulative idiocy here — well worth a read. Working Assets has more, as does Nico at the Huffington Post. And, as Taylor points out, military officers are behind the Webb Amendment solidly.
So, if you live in Virginia, please especially give Sen. Warner a call. Tell him not to fall for the Bush Administration snow job and bribery unit — a few troops may come home before Christmas, but that is no excuse to screw the other 130,000 plus troops left in Iraq (You know, the same number we had there before the escalation? Don’t be a rube, Sen. Warner, they were already scheduled to come home before the Petraeus/Crocker dodge and phony show — you’ve been played by the WH.)
Please take some time this morning to make some calls — in support of the restoration of habeas rights and in support of the Webb Amendment (or the Dwell Time Amendment, as it is also called) as well. As Maha says, just do it. It’s crunch time, and your call can really make a difference today!
You can call toll free here (H/T to Katymine):
1 (800) 828 – 0498
1 (800) 459 – 1887

Every single Senator needs a call today, regardless of whether they are on the target lists. Here are some Senators that I’m hearing could use some extra persuasion before the vote today on habeas:

All of the above have been designated as on the fence, potentially wobbly, or not taking a position as yet on the habeas amendment, and need an extra nudge, please.
The following need a nudge on the Webb Amendment:
Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska)
George Voinovich (R-Ohio)
DC: (202) 224-3353
Cleveland: (216) 522-7095
Elizabeth Dole (R-North Carolina)
John Warner (R-Virginia)
DC: (202) 224-2023
Roanoke: (540) 857-2676
Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky)
Arlen Specter (R-Pennsylvania)
Harrisburg: (717) 782-3951
Bonus – Ask Harry Reid to “don’t let Republicans obstruct – make them stand and filibuster”:
Las Vegas: 702-388-5020
Also, Sen. Webb’s staff has put together a great tool for e-mailing your Senators about the amendment. Thanks again for all the effort, gang. Your Constitution and your nation (and this blogger) really appreciate it!
