Is There A Doctor In the House?

9781586484255.jpgOn Sunday, the FDL Book Salon will be hosted by Jim Himes who is running against Chris Shays in CT-04. He’ll be moderating the discussion of The Political Brain with author Drew Westen. Jim is a great candidate and a thoughtful guy, and when he was here a few weeks ago chatting with Howie Klein in a Blue America session he mentioned that he was reading this book so we thought we’d have him back to discuss it.

I’d also like to note that Jim is already doing amazing things for the district. Does anyone think it’s just a coincidence that Jim is an affordable housing guy, and in July Shays got a $6 million grant from the federal government for…affordable housing? Not that Karl Rove is politicizing the government, mind you. Just because Shays got more than 25 grants totalling over $46 million between April, 2006 and election day shouldn’t make Henry Waxman suspicious that the White House was funneling money into the districts of vulnerable Republicans in order to illegaly influence elections, and Shays is probably right, Waxman is probably just conducting a “partisan witch hunt.” (/snark) Still, it’s great that Chris Van Hollen of the DCCC was up in Norwalk supporting Himes this week. It’s hard enough to run against GOP election money, let alone the coffers of the federal government.

But the real question — and yes, it must be asked — has Shays become as crazy as a peach-orchard boar? Even the mainstream media seems to think so — the Fairfield County Weekly asks “18 trips to Iraq later, has Chris Shays lost his mind?” and you can see reporters tip-toeing around around the subject of his mental stability here (lest they they set off bughouse Grampa Chris and all hell break loose).

No doubt Himes will be able to put to good use much of the wisdom gleaned from The Political Brain. It was written by a shrink, and Shays certainly needs one.
