A Festive Scene in Olympia Today

A Festive Scene in Olympia Today” is how the Seattle Times describes the opening day of the Domestic Partnership registry in Olympia, WA today.

I’ll quibble with the Seattle Time’s assessment;  I rate the mood today not festive but pragmatic.  Yes, there were a few teary eyes, some supportive car horn hoots, and some congratulatory cheer as the first couples emerged from the Secretary of State’s* office, holding aloft DP certificates and proof-of-deepdom ID cards.  But no one is ever satisfied trying to fill their belly with crumbs.  The new DPs are widely seen as a much-needed emergency measure.  With them we have reached the base camp.  Next we rope up and summit. I think the following image pretty well sums up the feel of the day.

As of 11 AM, about 100 couples had lined up to register for the 12 rights and protections provided by the new scheme.  A DP allows deeps (can you think of a better term?) to visit each other in the hospital and make medical decisions, inherit without a will, and decide how remains will be handled.  Bill text here.

Although the registry is also open to heterosexual couples over age 62, I didn’t see any in line this morning.  But it will be a while before we know the shape of the DP registrant pool, since couples can also register by mail.  I guess that’s the DP way of eloping.

Btw, there were no protesters today.  Just this delicious bit in the Seattle PI.

One influential voice in the evangelical community, Bob Higley, the recently retired lobbyist for Positive Christian Agenda, says [opposing LGBT civil rights advances] looks like a losing battle to him.

“The culture shift is becoming more and more apparent and the likelihood of a turnaround is very remote,” he says, particularly with young people becoming more gay-friendly and Washington becoming more of a “blue” state.

Heh.  Me like that.  Of course, other WA un-Christian fundamentalists insist that they will continue to milk the cash cow fight against fairness and equality.  So…how many more of these faux religionists do you think we’ll find booked for embezzlement, adultery, prostitution and child rape before they finally capitualte?

*Thanks to folks at the Secretary of State for being so organized and downright friendly today!
