Tommy likes those money-making Jews
Republican prez wannabe Tommy Thompson had to apologize for lobbing this incredible bigoted stereotype out there:
“I’m in the private sector and for the first time in my life I’m earning money,” Thompson told the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism. “You know that’s sort of part of the Jewish tradition and I do not find anything wrong with that.”
The old saw — money-grubbing Jews. Of course he tried to dig himself out of the hole, but, well, this really is a sucky elaboration on the earlier comment:
“I just want to clarify something because I didn’t (by) any means want to infer or imply anything about Jews and finances and things. What I was referring to, ladies and gentlemen, is the accomplishments of the Jewish religion. You’ve been outstanding business people and I compliment you for that.”
So later, Thompson spokesman Tony Jewell had to come out with this statement.
“Governor Thompson recognizes he misspoke in his remarks to the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, and is very apologetic, especially given his strong relationship with the Jewish community in the United States and Israel…He didn’t mean it as such. He is sorry he misspoke in complimenting the success that Jewish people have had in the United States. It is something that he admires – financially and otherwise.”
Man, this is a bumper crop of Republican presidential candidates all prepped and ready to self-destruct. If we can’t beat this car full of clowns, we’re in deep trouble.
The best part is that the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel thinks it’s the nail in his candidacy’s coffin. I was hoping to hear more about all his dailliances just to keep things sleazy.
