AFA bears false witness again
John Aravosis at Americablog received the latest email alert from the American Family Association, and I guess it must be fundraising time in Tupelo, MS — the lies are going out in the latest action alert.
This time, the organization has accused the DNC of taking the Christ out of Easter (guess Christmas is too far away).
[T]he Democratic Party has taken Christ and the Resurrection out of Easter…. The DNC treated Easter as if was not unique to the Christian faith, and made it into a nondescript, universal, nonexclusive religious celebration celebrated by every religion in the world.
John then pulls the actual statement by the DNC that the AFA is railing about:
“Easter Sunday is a joyful celebration. The holiday represents peace, redemption and renewal, a theme which brings hope to people of all faiths. During this time Christians are called to remember who they are as people of faith, and that even the greatest of evils will not have the last word. It is also a time to reflect upon and be in solidarity with those who are persecuted and suffering among us. We should also use this time to honor those who continue to make incredible sacrifices for us, including our brave men and women in the armed forces serving overseas during this holiday. I would like to wish all those celebrating around the world this Sunday, a joyous Easter.”
That’s what the AFA twisted into its latest e-blast. John also notes what former columnist and staff attorney Joe Murray said about the narrow view of “Christianity” that exists within the organization.
I remember during a weekly mandatory devotional at AFA, one top AFA executive made the statement that Catholics were not Christians (being a Catholic? this was news to me).
This is also the same organization that constantly lies about the hate crimes bill to the fundies, saying that it “may be the first step toward limiting your freedom to speak out against open homosexual activity.”
The AFA has zero credibility and it needs to fill its coffers so that it can continue its non-stop anti-gay campaigns, which includes the promotion of the work of junk scientist Paul Cameron, whose Colorado Springs-based Family Research Institute was declared by Southern Poverty Law Center as an active hate group.
