Universal Press Syndicate says it won't dump Coulter; she drops the 'Faggot' bomb again

[UPDATE: MediaMatters has a comprehensive list of newspapers that carry her column, along with contact info.]

Well look at this — the news syndicate thinks Ms. Faggot-bomb is A-OK. Greg @ The Horses Mouth:

As you may have heard by now, Universal Press Syndicate, the outfit that syndicates Ann Coulter’s column, is coming under tremendous pressure to drop Coulter’s column in the wake of her “faggot” comment. The gay rights group Human Rights Campaign, for instance,  launched a letter-writing campaign late yesterday demanding that UPS nix her column.

Well, I’ve just gotten in touch with UPS, and they’ve delivered their answer: No.

Lee Salem, the president and editor of UPS said this in an email reply to him:

Thank you for taking the time to write. The contracts with the many writers and cartoonists we represent call for specific products and we have no legal interest in what they may do or say outside of that relationship. In the case of Ann Coulter (and others across the political spectrum whom readers have urged us to drop), she is not an employee and we have no legal power to “fire” her, though, of course, any of her subscribing newspapers can drop her column at any time. Whether the words she chose in referring to John Edwards were misplaced humor or outright bigotry, we would not have distributed them in her column.

Kathie Kerr, UPS’s assistant vice president of communications also added they are not responding to the HRC email campaign. In response, HRC is urging people to contact the editors of papers carrying Coulter’s column.

After the fold, read how she continued her Faggot-bombing over the weekend…And from Americablog, we learn that the brazen Coultergeist, darling of the conservatives, isn’t sorry in the least, because she lobbed the F-Bomb again on March 3 at the Center for Reclaiming America, part of the empire of Talibangelist James Kennedy of Coral Ridge Ministries. She went for bonus points by intimating that the murder of medical professionals that provide abortion services is not a big deal.

From Americans United for the Separation of Church and State:

During her March 3 remarks at Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church, Coulter issued an anti-gay slur and excused the murder of doctors who perform abortions.

The Rev. Barry W. Lynn, Americans United executive director, sharply criticized Coulter’s incendiary rhetoric and called on Gary Cass, head of the Center for Reclaiming America, to publicly repudiate it.

“Ann Coulter’s statements can only be described as loathsome,” said Lynn. “It is astounding to me that this type of vitriol was unleashed before a religious organization that claims to be `reclaiming’ America for Christ. This rhetoric must be repudiated immediately.”

In her remarks, Coulter made light of the murder of abortion doctors and clinic personnel.

Noting that seven doctors and clinic personnel had been killed, Coulter said, “Those few abortionists were shot, or, depending on your point of view, had a procedure with a rifle performed on them. I’m not justifying it, but I do understand how it happened….The number of deaths attributed to Roe v. Wade about 40 million aborted babies and seven abortion clinic workers; 40 million to seven is also a pretty good measure of how the political debate is going.”

Rev. Lynn, don’t hold your breath for Cass to do anything about it, and perhaps Universal Press Syndicate doesn’t have a problem publishing Coulter, even after this.
