More Americans Favor Gay President Over Atheist

A Gallup poll has found that 55% of Americans would vote for a gay President, but less than half would vote for an atheist.

The poll also found that 94% of Americans would vote for an African-American President, but only 88% said they would vote for a woman President, and only 72% would vote for a Mormon (vid. Mitt Romney) for the role.

Hard to tell how much these numbers apply generally, especially since most of the categories (except “gay” and “atheist”) apply to specific candidates this time around. Still, I find it encouraging that a majority of voters would consider gay, black, or female candidates, even though I’m disappointed (though not surprised) at the continuing role of religion in politics.
