Two trans-killings reported since yesterday
The victim, Nakia Ladelle Baker, 31, of Richardson Road in Murfreesboro had trauma to his head and was found next to his car at 3312-B Nolensville Road, behind Club Adventura & Billiards, Metro police said.An autopsy was scheduled for Monday, police said.
Baker was found dressed in women’s clothing, police said. Witnesses reported seeing Baker in the club socializing with other men who were dressed as women, police said.
During the arrest, officers gained information that led them to Logan’s apartment in the 3900 block of Kansas Avenue in Northwest. Police said they found the body of 42-year-old Grafton Lee Person. He apparently had suffered from blunt-force trauma. He was taken to the medical examiner’s office, where he was pronounced dead.Logan was charged with first-degree murder.
According to the Metropolitan Police Department’s Gay and Lesbian Unit, Person was a male-to-female member of the transgender community who went by the name “Diamond Person.”
According to police, evidence revealed at Logan’s arraignment indicated Logan beat Person in the head with a hammer, choked the victim and placed a plastic bag over the victim’s head.
It’s a hard thing for me to accept: being transgender and dying a violent death seem to have too much correlation.
(Vigil information after flip)For those who live in DC, Transgender Advocates Earline Budd and Gi Gi Thomas forward the following from the Remembering Group (A list for coordinators and others around the world who are working on “Transgender Day of Remembrance” events):
Please forgive my hitting you with this on a Monday Morning, but the transgender community has been hit with one of the second murders in the District for this new year of 2007. The post announced the murder on Sunday as the second murder in the District but did not have any information pertaining to the person who is Ms. “Diamond” Lee Person who was found killed in her apartment. Her partner has been officially charged in the case and we are reaching out to support Diamond’s family who have welcomed our help and support.
Please circulate this information to all whom you know would be interested and may have known the deceased. Those that have local and national media contact, could you please send out the attached release and note that it is ok to send it out on your stationary and add as appropriate. The vigil is scheduled for tomorrow at 5:30p.m.
Again, thanks on behalf of the transgender community and family members of the late Diamond Person.
