Just some random TV chit chat.
Tonight Kate and I were just kicking back with the pups after doing chores and errands. I made a pot of corn chowder and we popped in the DVD of Ridley Scott’s Gladiator (2000). It was as bloody as I remembered, but well-directed, written and edited. Hans Zimmer’s score is superb. The FX still hold up as well.
I hadn’t seen it since its release in theatres, and I completely forgot that Danish Connie Nielsen was in it –playing Lucilla, the sister of crazy-ass Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix). Nielsen is the excellent actress (and hottie) who has been playing Detective Dani Beck on Law and Order: SVU while Emmy-winner Mariska Hargitay (Olivia Benson, the original hottie, of course!) was on maternity leave.
The complex Dani Beck character looks like it has run its course, now that Olivia Benson’s back on the job. She was amusingly aggressive and a technophile, and had a hard time fitting in the SVU at first, but she really caught fire in the several episodes in which she appeared. Kate and I were hoping that she was going to a lesbian (she had a great vibe), but dammit, they established early on that she was widowed when she mentions her husband, also a police officer, died in the line of duty. To add insult to injury they had her nearly hooking up with Elliot Stabler (Emmy-nominated Chris Meloni, one of my faves). Sigh. But she has been exciting to watch regardless. 🙂
Nielsen was great in the role and had great chemistry with the SVU crew. I have no idea if they’ll bring her back, but she’d be a great addition to the cast.
