Voter Suppression? You Decide…
You tell me: you receive a call telling you that if you show up to vote at your registered polling place, you will be arrested. Feeling intimidated?
I've gotten a spate of wingnut e-mails since yesterday with all the whiny talking points that (a) no voter intimidation is going on in VA and (b) we're just making it up. Oh, really? Then how do you explain multiple recordings like this from Virginia voters? And the fact that the FBI is investigating these claims of voter intimidation already, according to MSNBC? (I don't think I need to point out that trying to cheat people out of their votes is illegal.) And that the reports are coming from all over Virginia, in predominantly Democratic-leaning areas, including a whole lot of dog-whistle planning for calls to a lot of minorities all over Virginia?
I'm sorry, dirty trick may happen every election, but this is really beyond excusing. I don't care what party you support. Calling people and threatening them with arrest if they exercise their right to vote is just wrong. Period. And it's a crime. If whomever is responsible for this gets caught and tried, they can join the GOP phone jamming criminals from the last election in the penitentiary…where they belong. Voting is too important to be treated in this cavalier manner — and it is about time that the GOP cheaters learned that lesson. How many people in the Republican party have to be put in jail before they learn that everyone's vote is important and ought to count?
As if the attempt at robocall irritation wasn't bad enough. Guess when all you have to sell is a bunch of rubber stamp Republican crap…you lie, cheat and generally try to tap dance your way to the finish line.
Had enough? Get up, go vote for Democrats and let's get some accountability. Cast your vote for freedom! (This is must see video, in case you haven't yet seen it. Fantastic stuff for today!)
And if you have trouble voting, try these numbers:
1-888-DEM-VOTE for the DNC's voter hotline — this will get you directly to DNC lawyers and others to help with fraud issues.
Election Protection's 1-866-OUR-VOTE has live operators who can address some problems over the phone and dispatch lawyers on the ground, if necessary.
Common Cause's 1-866-MYVOTE-1 can help people find their polling place.
