If you thought there was chaos in Iraq before, just wait. 6AM: CNN is reporting that Saddam and two others (his half-brother and former intelligence chief Barzan Hassan) received death by hanging. (CNN)
The 50-minute session was dramatic. Hussein entered with a Quran in hand, as he had in the past. He began screaming Allahu Akhbar — God is great — as the verdict and sentencing was read.
He also argued with the chief judge and shouted, “Damn you and your court.” As the judge ordered him taken away, Hussein said, “Don’t push me, boy.”
…Another defense attorney, Ziad al-Najdawi, angrily told reporters as he left the courtroom, “That’s the American justice.”
Towns with large Sunni populations were under curfew, while those provinces with Shiite and Kurdish populations were not. The Baghdad airport has been closed until further notice. In the AP story on this:
Some feared the verdicts could intensify Iraq’s sectarian violence after a trial that stretched over nine months in 39 sessions and ended nearly 3 1/2 months ago. Clashes immediately broke out Sunday in north Baghdad’s heavily Sunni Azamiyah district. Elsewhere in the capital, celebratory gunfire rang out.
“This government will be responsible for the consequences, with the deaths of hundreds, thousands or even hundreds of thousands, whose blood will be shed,” Salih al-Mutlaq, a Sunni political leader, told the al-Arabiya satellite television station.
