I'm the Denier, and I Deny
[Hi again; it’s Kathy from Birmingham Blues]
George W is unhappy with Poppy for even mentioning the possibility that the Democrats will take back Congress in November.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) –gently admonished his father for saying he hates to think what life would be like for his son if the Democrats win control of Congress in the November 7 election.
…”He shouldn’t be speculating like this, because — he should have called me ahead of time and I’d tell him they’re not going to (win),” a smiling Bush told ABC “This Week” in an interview broadcast on Sunday.
…Earlier this month, the elder Bush was reported to have told a Republican fund-raiser in a Philadelphia suburb that “if we have some of these wild Democrats in charge of these (congressional) committees, it will be a ghastly thing for our country.”
Okay, first, I doubt W even knows what “admonish” means. Maybe Laura can help him look it up in the dictionary.
Second, I won’t be popping any champagne corks over the election till the results are certified, but Bush’s pretense that everything is hunky dory in Republican Land is getting creepy. Doesn’t he have any advisors who tell him the truth? I don’t expect him to be weeping and wringing his hands, but the “inexplicably upbeat” attitude makes me think he’s using some really good drugs. Or he thinks the Deibold fix is in.
Third, I don’t share Poppy’s opinion that a win by the “wild” Democrats would be ghastly for the country, but it certainly would be ghastly for W. We’d see an end to his de facto dictatorship, and he wouldn’t get to be The Decider anymore. That might be unimaginable for him, but it would be the best thing that could happen for what’s left of our democracy.
