Osama's still free as a bird
Zogby poll: Do you agree or disagree that there was a connection between Saddam Hussein and the 9/11 terror attacks?
65% of Republicans agreed.
32% and 39% of Dems and Independents (a scarily high figure) also believe the lie. The Faux News disinformation machine has clearly worked; we’ve got a country full of sheeple.
Pollster John Zogby: “Five years after 9/11, the dramatic results from this survey are found in the different partisan perceptions of national security, and what people believe should be done to keep our country safe. Democrats and independents line up against the policies of the Bush administration, while Republicans line up supporting them.
“Most Republicans said it was right for the U.S. to expand the war on terrorism by attacking Iraq, that there was a connection between Saddam Hussein and the 9/11 terror attacks, and that they believe the government should have the right to conduct searches of personal property and telephone conversations to find terrorists. Most Democrats disagree on every point.
While those people are in a fog as the fifth anniversary of 9/11 approaches, it’s time to pass along this bit of information that is a helluva lot more meaningful than the fantasy ties to Saddam, courtesy of ABC’s Brian Ross and Gretchen Peters:
Osama bin Laden, America’s most wanted man, will not face capture in Pakistan if he agrees to lead a “peaceful life,” Pakistani officials tell ABC News. The surprising announcement comes as Pakistani army officials announced they were pulling their troops out of the North Waziristan region as part of a “peace deal” with the Taliban.
If he is in Pakistan, bin Laden “would not be taken into custody,” Major General Shaukat Sultan Khan told ABC News in a telephone interview, “as long as one is being like a peaceful citizen.”
…In addition to the pullout of Pakistani troops, the “peace agreement” between Pakistan and the Taliban also provides for the Pakistani army to return captured Taliban weapons and prisoners.
“What this means is that the Taliban and al Qaeda leadership have effectively carved out a sanctuary inside Pakistan,” said ABC News consultant Richard Clarke, the former White House counter-terrorism director.
The agreement was signed on the same day President Bush said the United States was working with its allies “to deny terrorists the enclaves they seek to establish in ungoverned areas across the world.”
So much for the War on Terror. Thousands of Americans perished on 9/11, and there are direct ties to bin Laden, yet the U.S. and its alleged ally in the War on Terror, Pakistan, has given the man safe harbor. That should be all over the media.
Richard Cranium at All Spin Zone:
When I heard this news a little while ago, I was literally blown away. Here’s a guy, number one (no longer with a bullet, apparently) on the Terrorism Hot 100 list, and one of our key allies [snicker] in the global war on terror, Pakistan [guffaw] is calling Century 21 agents for him! [BWAHAHaHahahahaha…]
…I’m waiting for some intrepid reporter to ask Tony Snow tomorrow about the much ballyhoo’d “National Strategy for Combating Terrorism” that the Bush regime released today, and ask how the “get out of jail free card” that was handed to Osama fits into their plans…
Don’t hold your breath for coverage of this — or for Dems to actually take this ball and run with it. I’d be pleasantly surprised if this happens.
After all, despite the great work of Ross and Peters over at ABC, the rest of the network has hopped into bed with the administration as GOP Broadcast Network #2, as it plans to air the docudrama, “The Path to 9/11,” on September 10th and 11th.
This film, it turns out, was penned by conservative shills Cyrus Nowrasteh and David Cunningham, and it appears only winger bloggers are receiving advance viewing copies of the film. The network is feeling the heat and the public blog on the fictionalized beauty treatment of Bush, has been yanked, now that the winger hoax cat is out of the bag.
Firedoglake points to The Spotlight Project, which will allow you to contact the media about this obvious suck-off of the administration in an election year when GOP numbers have been imploding, based on facts.
And there’s more — Jon at Perrspectives:
While ABC is complicit in doing the bidding of the conservative propaganda machine with the upcoming “Path to 9/11,” ABC News has maintained a seeming vow of silence. Instead, ABC World News Tonight with Charles Gibson on Sunday focused its venom on the new “Iraq for Sale” documentary from “Outfoxed” producer Robert Greenwald. Without investigating the allegations of contractor fraud and profiteering detailed in the film, ABC’s Dan Harris suggested Greenwald’s documentary was purely partisan.
And where’s Osama? I guess he’s out house-shopping in Pakistan right now.
