Football players gang-raped girl, 11, police say

The good news: No new female child rape atrocity to report in Iraq.

The bad news:

FRESNO, California (AP) — The rape of an 11-year-old girl may have involved as many as 10 men, most of whom are football players at local community colleges, police said.

Police arrested two men in connection with the rape Saturday night, and officials said they identified eight others as persons of interest in the case. Most or all are students at either Fresno City College or Reedley College, police said.

The victim, a runaway from a group home, went to a Fresno apartment complex Saturday night to visit an acquaintance, said police spokesman Jeff Cardinale.

While she was inside one of the units, she allegedly was sexually assaulted multiple times by several men, he said.

The girl then fled the apartment and sought help from a couple on the street who called police, Cardinale said.

What’s the descriptive adjective that is missing from the story? If you guessed “as many as 10 heterosexual men”, you win the prize.

Not that I think rape is any better or worse if it’s done by heterosexuals or homosexuals. It’s just that if this were a gang rape of, say, the team’s waterboy, the newspaper may not print “as many as 10 homosexual men”, but that’s where the discussion would go in the talking head cable shows and the fundie-friendly newspaper articles. We’d hear all about the “homosexual agenda” and how these vile pedophiles were trying to lure the poor waterboy into their debauched lifestyle.

So… were these 10 football players trying to recruit the 11-year-old girl into the heterosexual lifestyle? Were they promoting a heterosexual agenda? For if we were to crunch the numbers, the vast majority of violent crime, rape, and pedophilia is perpetrated by heterosexuals, above and beyond their proportional representation in the general population.

But you never seem to hear anything about open displays of heterosexuality causing all these dreadful harms, do you?

Just a thought for the day. I mean, wouldn’t it be interesting if sexuality was always referred to in news stories? “Openly heterosexual Enron swindler Ken Lay died today…” “President George W. Bush, a heterosexual, today signed a bill…” “Alleged heterosexual Ann Coulter…” “Ambiguous-sexual Congressman David Dreier voted for…”
