NYC's Bloomberg: let gays marry
“I do not believe that government should be in the business of telling people who they can and can’t marry…I believe New Yorkers should have the right to marry whomever they choose, regardless of sexual orientation.”
Go Mike! He also trashed intelligent design as “creationism by another name” in his radio address, and took wingnuts to task for blast conservatives who oppose stem-cell research and naysayers who question the evidence of global warming. (NYDN):
Mayor Bloomberg landed another left on the right yesterday, coming out strongly in favor of gay marriage – and vowing the city will perform same-sex wedding ceremonies, if allowed.
The Republican mayor used his weekly Sunday radio address on Memorial Day weekend to say he is “firmly opposed” to any constitutional amendment outlawing same-sex marriage.
…”The U.S. Constitution should be something that unites, rather than divides Americans,” said Bloomberg, a life-long Democrat who joined the GOP to run for mayor in 2001.
…Last week, he used a commencement address at his alma mater, Johns Hopkins University, to blast conservatives for their opposition to stem-cell research and their questioning of the science behind global warming.
“Today we are seeing hundreds of years of scientific discovery being challenged by people who simply disregard facts that don’t happen to agree with their agendas,” he told the medical school graduates.
At this point, party affiliation doesn’t matter, because it’s the exception, not the rule to see politicians willing to speak out about equality — and not just about fig-leaf opposition to a federal amendment.
