Git Yer Boots On, It’s Recess Time!

It’s recess time on the Hill and our congressional representatives are trekking into their own back yards for a spell — the perfect time to stop by and let them know how you feel about leading Democrat Russ Feingold’s censure resolution.

This week’s excuse for not yet supporting censure seems to be that an investigation is needed into Bush’s actions regarding the NSA wiretaps before other lesser Senatorial Democrats can know whether or not they deserve such action (as opposed to the Evan Bayh "let’s just make it all legal and pin a medal on him" strategy).  Aside from the fact that everyone with opposable thumbs knows that no such investigation will take place, as Glenn Greenwald says, the facts of Bush’s illegal activities are not in dispute:

Under FISA, it is a criminal offense to eavesdrop on Americans without the oversight and approval of the FISA court. Section 1809 of FISA expressly provides that "[a] person is guilty of an offense if he intentionally – (1) engages in electronic surveillance under color of law except as authorized by statute. . . ." And Section 2511(2)(f) provides that FISA "shall be the exclusive means by which electronic surveillance . . . may be conducted." Thus, a person has broken the law if — as the President admits he did — he orders eavesdropping on Americans without complying with the warrant requirements of the statute. Period.

Today we’re asking people to stop by the home office of your Democratic Senator and let them know that we are real, we’re not just keyboard phantoms spamming them with email.  If even 10 or 15 people show up in their state offices, particularly while the Senators are home and likely to hear about it, it will give weight and credibility to all the noise we make so successfully online for the rest of the year.  If you can make your way to a town hall meeting and express your feelings, so much the better.

You can find the local addresses for your Senator here by clicking through to their home pages.  This is one of those times when the actions of a very few people can have a really big impact so if you’ve got a few minutes to stop by and chat up the local staff, it’s an excellent way to engage in participatory democracy and give Dubya a good swift kick in the ‘nads at the same time.

Conventional wisdom is shifting on this one and it’s really satisfying to be a part of it. And Feingold needs our support.

Let’s pig pile on the playground bully.
