The NC Twilight Zone

I wasn’t around last night, so there was a ton of email sitting in my Inbox to go through. I was curious about the fact that several messages had the subject line “Vernon Robinson.” I’m thinking, why on earth would folks write me last night about the self-proclaimed “black Jesse Helms,” a Repug who’s running for Congress in the 13th District of NC?

It’s Vern’s new ad that’s causing a stir.

I’ve blogged about this up-and-coming star of the GOP both before and after Vern-o announced his bid to unseat Brad Miller.

He’s willing to let his wingnuttery all hang out in all its glory for the public to see, based on this TV ad he’s created (via Crooks and Liars; I also downloaded the Quicktime version).

I haven’t seen it air yet; this ad, along with radio pieces can be found on his campaign site. [UPDATE: The campaign pulled the ad from the site, ha ha ha ha; it now says “Coming Soon.” Got a little too hot for you, Vern?]

The Twilight Zone-theme and music are quite appropriate in this case. This is one of the most offensive — and amusing — pieces of political theatre I have ever seen, with a picture of a fetus, then invoking the Homo AlertTM with an image of men kissing. He moves on to “aliens,” showing spaceships, then cutting to a pic of Mexicans scaling fences. This ad packs every wingnut, unhinged Freeper cause into this one media piece.

What’s amusing is that the spot says a lot about this self-loathing black man — the fact that he’s a Republican is incidental, other than it’s the party as it exists today that kowtows to bigots like Robinson. When the announcer in the ad is bleating about not being able to “post the Ten Commandments in public or say God in public.”, it cuts the all-American white children in the picture above.

The spot immediately segues to a mug shot of Jesse Jackson and a retro shot of Al Sharpton to talk about black babies born out of wedlock and quotas. There’s no logical connection, only the juxtaposition for shock value. It’s sad.

Yes, Vern is appealing to the base of the party and its values. He even calls the ad “The Twilight Zone vs. Leave It To Beaver” — the last shot is of the Cleaver family backing out of their driveway, going out for a car ride. The Real America.

It’s Vern’s ode to the TV lily white surburban fantasy world. In the real world, he would have been sitting at the back of the bus and chased from the whites-only lunch counter. Nice.

I guess that he’s confident that all of these tactics won’t scare off the moderate vote. Even in NC, I have to believe this crap isn’t going to fly. BTW, I wouldn’t be surprised if my father knows and supports Vern Robinson, since he is connected in NC GOP circles, and both have ties to the John Locke Foundation.

I caution you not to dismiss Robinson as a fringe whack job (though he fights mightily for that moniker) — look at this list of well-known Repugs who Vernon says “at one time or another I have been endorsed by…”

Jesse Helms, Alan Keyes, Bob Barr, Elizabeth Dole, Lauch Faircloth, Richard Burr, Tom Tancredo, U.S. Immigration Reform PAC, English Language PAC, Jack Kemp, Dick Armey, Gary Bauer, the NRA, the Executive Directors of Gun Owners of America and the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, Right-to-Life, Bill Bennett, Pat Buchanan, Pete du Pont, Police Benevolent Association, Int’l Association of Fire Fighters, Republican Liberty Caucus, The Dixie Daily News, Southern Caucus, Richard Petty, and Jeb Bush.

I wonder if any of the above folks have any comment on the tasteless ad…wait, what am I thinking? This is right up the mainstream GOP alley. The luminaries on the list can always email Vern and compliment him on his ace political savvy.

I take that level of support to mean that Vernon Robinson is the new face of the Republican Party — and its mainstream views and values. We shall tie candidates like this to them early and often.

Can we get Ken Mehlman to comment as well, since Vern must be the part of his “outreach” plan to black Americans?

I will always fight for what’s right and you will always know where I stand. We cannot redefine marriage as any grouping of adults and children. I will vigorously oppose homosexual marriages, marriage-lite proposals and adoptions, as well as “gay” Scoutmasters. While my opponent believes that those in a drag queen parade and Rosa Parks are both civil rights leaders, I will join the dozens of Congressmen who sponsored an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that provides that “Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman.”

“I want your children to be able to say ‘under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance” and see the Ten Commandments on public property.”

“As we have witnessed over 50 million babies killed since Roe v Wade it is important to note that a country that will accept 50 million dead babies will accept anything; obstruction of justice, perjury, suborning perjury, witness tampering, bribery, criminal violations of campaign finance laws, pardons for cash, the criminal misuse of confidential FBI files, violations of the Oath of Office, the desecration of the Oval Office, High Crimes and Misdemeanors, trading missile technology for cash from the Chinese, rape, serial adultery, sexual harassment, even treason. ”
