We're exporting democracy over there so we don't have to have it over here

Wonkette reports on a very disturbing bit of censorship being administered on the web access of our Marines. Yes, this is the kind of free speech and democracy we can point to as an example of the freedom we’re attempting to bring to the Middle East:

Just to let you know, the US Marines have blocked access to “Wonkette” along with numerous other sites such as personal email (i.e. Yahoo, AT&T;, Hotmail, etc), blogs that don’t agree with the government point of view, personal websites, and some news organizatons. This has taken effect as of the beginning of February. I have no problem with them blocking porn sites (after all it is a government network), but cutting off access to our email and possibly-not-toeing-the-government-line websites is a bit much.

So, how far does the web site blocking go? Wonkette digs a little deeper and finds that there’s a certain, shall we say, fair and balanced method employed to determine what’s OK for our Marines to read:

Unfortunately anonomizers don’t work out here (never have). Anyway, I had a few minutes today and thought I’d look and see what else was banned on the Marine web here. I think the results speak for themselves:

Wonkette – “Forbidden, this page (http://www.wonkette.com/) is categorized as: Forum/Bulletin Boards, Politics/Opinion.”

Bill O’Reilly (www.billoreilly.com) – OK

Air America (www.airamericaradio.com) – “Forbidden, this page (http://www.airamericaradio.com/) is categorized as: Internet Radio/TV, Politics/Opinion.”

Rush Limbaugh (www.rushlimbaugh.com) – OK

ABC News “The Note” – OK

Website of the Al Franken Show (www.alfrankenshow.com) – “Forbidden, this page (http://www.airamericaradio.com/) is categorized as: Internet Radio/TV, Politics/Opinion.”

G. Gordon Liddy Show (www.liddyshow.us) – OK

Don & Mike Show (www.donandmikewebsite.com) – “Forbidden, this page (http://www.donandmikewebsite.com/) is categorized as: Profanity, Entertainment/Recreation/Hobbies.”

So, please tell me how Bill O’Loofah, Rush PillPopper, and G. Felon Liddy don’t qualify as “Politics/Opinion”, but Al Franken and Air America do? Oh, wait, I know, it’s because the former three aren’t opinion, they’re facts.
Kossack Hunter sums it all up:

Gee, I’m sensing a pattern here.

Bill O’Reilly (www.billoreilly.com) – OK

Cost himself a pile of money by making sexually explicit phone calls to a female coworker while masturbating.

Rush Limbaugh (www.rushlimbaugh.com) – OK

Oxycontin addict, used his maid as unwilling drug mule. Currently not in jail for some reason yet to be explained.

G. Gordon Liddy Show (www.liddyshow.us) – OK

Felon.

Quite the standards, there. Color me shocked that they’re allowing Republicans to use uniformed troops as props at campaign events, in direct and unambiguous violation of military rules.

I don’t suppose that Radical Writ or Pam’s House Blend makes it through the filters, either.
