'Black Jesse Helms' making a run for Congress
This is for the seat in the 13th District, which stretches from Raleigh, along the Virginia border and down into Greensboro. Robinson’s bed buddies in the GOP informed him that going against Watt was a sure-fire way to flame out, so I love the spin from CQPolitics.com from the GOP:
His campaign office released a statement saying that GOP leaders decided the 12th “was too gerrymandered to be competitive and would be a waste of Robinson’s resources.
Mel Watt would have kicked Vern’s ever-lovin’, Jesse-lovin’ behind. (N&O;):
Vernon Robinson, who has embraced the nickname of “the black Jesse Helms,” on Tuesday decided to challenge Democratic U.S. Rep. Brad Miller of Raleigh.
Robinson, a former Winston-Salem councilman, had earlier filed to run against U.S. Rep. Mel Watt of Charlotte in the 12th District. But Robinson said he decided to shift to the Miller race in District 13 at the urging of GOP leaders and donors who argued that he would have a better chance of defeating Miller.
…He is noted for his aggressive campaign style. In 2004, he ran a TV ad in which Sen. Hillary Clinton’s face morphed into that of Virginia Foxx, his primary opponent. Foxx was elected to Congress.
…But Robinson lost little time criticizing Miller, describing him as “a radical incumbent with too many kooky positions on the issues.” He also criticized Miller for what he called Miller’s vote against protecting the Pledge of Allegiance.
When reached for comment, Miller responded: “Wow. To be called kooky by Vernon Robinson.”When reached for comment, Miller responded: “Wow. To be called kooky by Vernon Robinson.” Miller said he expects Robinson to spend $3 million on attack ads.
“This will be an unpleasant race, not only for me but for the people who watch TV,” Miller said.
I would say that the level of wingnuttery that Robinson represents is hard to surpass, but that would be a lie, I cannot leave out the black automatons at Project 21, a group Robinson may want to join after Miller wipes the floor with him. Vern’s really unhinged and he has provided memorable quotes that I hope Miller tosses back in his face on the campaign trail.
I will always fight for what’s right and you will always know where I stand. We cannot redefine marriage as any grouping of adults and children. I will vigorously oppose homosexual marriages, marriage-lite proposals and adoptions, as well as “gay” Scoutmasters. While my opponent believes that those in a drag queen parade and Rosa Parks are both civil rights leaders, I will join the dozens of Congressmen who sponsored an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that provides that “Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman.”
“I want your children to be able to say ‘under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance” and see the Ten Commandments on public property.”
“As we have witnessed over 50 million babies killed since Roe v Wade it is important to note that a country that will accept 50 million dead babies will accept anything; obstruction of justice, perjury, suborning perjury, witness tampering, bribery, criminal violations of campaign finance laws, pardons for cash, the criminal misuse of confidential FBI files, violations of the Oath of Office, the desecration of the Oval Office, High Crimes and Misdemeanors, trading missile technology for cash from the Chinese, rape, serial adultery, sexual harassment, even treason. ”– some of the wit and wisdom of Vernon Robinson
