The abstinence queen's back…
But make no mistake — she doesn’t want any tax dollars being spent on them.
Proponents of abstinence education hope 2006 will be a positive year in their efforts to fight back the attacks on their cause from those who want to promote what some are calling the “C” message — safe sex through contraceptives and condom use.
Leslie Unruh, founder of Abstinence Clearinghouse, is preparing for the struggle. “We really want to plead to the Bush administration and to all of those who are taking the federal funding,” she says, imploring “let’s clean this up and let’s get rid of the contraception and let’s get rid of the ‘C’ message, and domestically and internationally, let’s have the tax dollars going to character education, which is abstinence until marriage.” Unruh insists that abstinence remains the only 100 percent effective way to avoid unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases.
