Murtha: I wouldn't join the military now
[UPDATE: Freepers rip into Murtha below.]
And the White House had no immediate comment after that drop-dead serious statement by decorated Vietnam combat veteran Rep. John Murtha. Gee, what are those chickenhawks in the White House going to say behind this… (Reuters):
Murtha told ABC News’ “Nightline” program that Iraq “absolutely” was a wrong war for President George W. Bush to have launched.
“Would you join (the military) today?,” he was asked in an interview taped on Friday.
“No,” replied Murtha of Pennsylvania, the top Democrat on the House of Representatives subcommittee that oversees defense spending and one of his party’s leading spokesmen on military issues.
“And I think you’re saying the average guy out there who’s considering recruitment is justified in saying ‘I don’t want to serve’,” the interviewer continued.
“Exactly right,” said Murtha, who drew White House ire in November after becoming the first ranking Democrat to push for a pullout of U.S. forces from Iraq as soon as it could be done safely.
…Murtha did not respond directly when asked whether a lack of combat experience might have affected the decision-making of Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and their former top deputies.
“Let me tell you, war is a nasty business. It sears the soul,” he said, choking up. “And it made a difference. The shadow of those killings stay with you the rest of your life.”
And the disgusting, almost certainly majority chickenhawk Freepi piss on Murtha — intimating that to hold his position means he’s senile. Boy, the knuckle-draggers can’t come up with much, huh?
“I’ve lost all respect for Murtha.”
“He is a senile old man who needs to be put out of our misery.”
“When I read comments by him I think of my much older brother who was in the Korean Conflict. He said that he would go to Iraq if he were much younger. One believes in his country, the other does not.”
“Don’t worry congressman, today’s Military has higher standards.”
“This guy is drunk on media attention.”
“Same here. Defeatists in war nauseate me. If he doesn’t support the goal of bringing freedom to Iraq, then he should come out and say so. But to just sit there and whine that it can’t be done while there are young men literally dying to achieve it, and still pretend that he’s on their side, is just contemptible.”
“Murtha probably wouldn’t have joined back then either if he was the person then that he is now. If he thinks Iraq is wrong, then Vietnam must’ve been far worse.”
“Knowing Marines, my uncle was a marine in the pacific in WWII, I can say with great knowledge that this man would be rejected by the Marines today. He wouldn’t have to worry about enlisting.”
“Yes, I’m sure it does. Never mind WHY you went to war, Murtha. It’s all about you and YOUR feelings; your demons. Yep. Trash your country around the world, give the go**amned Haji’s more ammo; feed propaganda to Al Quaeda and others……..you just go right ahead, if it makes YOU feel better, Colonel. Yes, you pantywaisted crybaby…….forget WHY you went to war for your country and for whom; it’s all about you, buddy.”
“I was AF, not a Marine, but I have a huge respect for the Corps. I have to believe that all Marines, current and former, would just as soon spit on this whiny sumbitch as look at him. Let the press fawn all they want; those that matter………Marines…………..must look at him with disgust.”
“Who would serve with a cut and run person like John.”
“The man is an embarrasment, I lost respect the first time he opened his mouth last month. Each time subsequently, it has deserved to be duct taped shut…..at least in a just world.”
“Disgusting traitorous PIG.”
“In his 31 years in the USMC, how much was active duty? I have had my fill of career reservists.”
“The military won’t take you if you wet the bed.”
“I had no idea who Murtha was until he spoke out against the war. I respect him for his military service, but he really needs to STHU. Al Jazeera (sp?) puts statements like his to use and it hurts our military men and women.”
“Murtha was a drill sergeant with 3 yrs. active duty, the rest spent in the reserves. Yet the press tries to make him into a military expert.”
“Someone needs to tell Murtha that cowards cut and run, Marines never do.”
“Someone on this thread noted that Murtha is on a media attention high. No doubt. I wonder how he’ll feel when the DNC and their lap dogs, the media, dump him after he has exhausted his usefulness to them.”
“Benedict Arnold was well loved by his men and General Washington. Murtha is a stooge for the dummies.”
“I was not quite sure if he was suffering from dementia. I am sure of it now.”
“Mr. Murtha was a Marine Corps Reservist. He volunteered for active duty in Vietnam. In the absence of evidence to the contrary, we must assume that his service in Vietnam, and his decorations, were legit. He should be honored for that. However, the press characterization of him as a 37-year career Marine is pure bunk. For most of those 37 years he was a politician, and for many years has served on the Defense subcommittee of the Appropriations Committee. You can bet that the Marines wined and dined him at every opportunity – and I’m sure that he returned the favor. He suffered no privations, enduring no long deployments, and certainly did not have to compete with his peers for infrequent promotions. The guy is a phony, and the MSM are soaking it all up.”
“Hey Murtha! Tuck your tie in your blouse, so that every Marine that sees you coming, can know what you are, without having to say a word to you.”
“I wouldn’t want that bloated pimp of the election industry anywhere near a military conflict. He probably would pull the new French flag out of his pocket and lead the parade of anti-Americans against our government. By the way, the new French flag changed the former red and blue sections to WHITE!”
“I’ve never served myself, but my wife is currently an active duty member of our armed forces so I have to take my hat off to anyone that has served. That being said, I think this man needs to be taken away by medical professionals and his competency needs to be checked, because no politician in their right mind would be attempting to undermine recruiting efforts during a time of war.”
