Fred Phelps gets the boot from city
St. Joseph, Missouri’s city council has passed an ordinance that will keep the Rotting CryptkeeperTM and his hate machine out of their town — specifically preventing the group’s protests at fallen solders’ funerals. (365gay.com):
The ordinance unanimously approved by the St. Joseph City Council does not bar the group from holding similar protests against gays at schools, churches or other venues. Phelps’ Westboro Baptist Church regularly demonstrates at schools what have gay-straight alliances, churches it believes to be “pro gay” and at performances of “The Laramie Project” the play about the hate-crime killing of Matthew Shepard.
The group first came to national attention when it staged a noisy homophobic rally at Shepard’s funeral.
The St. Joseph ordinance is similar to a proposed state measure that would bar protests at or near a funeral from an hour before a funeral service to an hour after it ends.
