Brent Steele, or rather “lawless, God-hating Demagogue Indiana necromancer State Sen. Brent Steele,” as Fred calls him, must be getting a lot of mileage out of this additional free publicity, after Sunday’s picketing. The cretins at the Westboro Baptist Church manage to tie him into the recent tornadoes.

Steele earned the honor of a protest by proposing legislation in response to WBC’s protest at a funeral for U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Jeremy Doyle, an Indianapolis native that was killed in Iraq. The bill would make disorderly conduct a felony offense if it occurs at a military funeral.

In related news about ignorance, the Kansas school board votes to teach “intelligent design” in its schools. Now all Kansans can get the same quality education that the Topeka-based Phelps clan does.

Revisiting a topic that exposed Kansas to nationwide ridicule six years ago, the state Board of Education approved science standards for public schools Tuesday that cast doubt on the theory of evolution.

The 6-4 vote was a victory for intelligent design advocates who helped draft the standards. Intelligent design holds that the universe is so complex that it must have been created by a higher power.

Critics of the new language charged that it was an attempt to inject God and creationism into public schools in violation of the separation of church and state.

This is a sad day. We’re becoming a laughingstock of not only the nation, but of the world, and I hate that,” said board member Janet Waugh, a Democrat.
