Senator Tom Coburn believes that he has acquired powers of deduction and perception beyond the general public because of his medical training. How else can you explain this unhinged exchange on Meet the Press (courtesy of Crooks and Liars), about his unique ability and qualifications to tell whether somebody is lying just by observing their body language.
SEN. COBURN on Roberts: I’ve tried to use my medical skills of observation of body language to ascertain your uncomfortableness and ill at ease with questions and responses. I will tell you that I am very pleased both in my observational capabilities as a physician to know that your answers have been honest and forthright as I watch the rest of your body respond to the stress that you’re under.
MR. RUSSERT: Do you believe as a physician you can tell whether a candidate for the Supreme Court is telling the truth?
SEN. COBURN: Mm-hm, I certainly have.
MR. RUSSERT: Has any–have you ever detected someone lying?
SEN. COBURN: Uh-huh, lots of times.
OMFG. I am really starting to think we need to have psyche workups on some of these freaks on the Hill. It’s bad enough that he believes that he has these powers, but he’s so deranged that he doesn’t mind bleating it on national TV. You folks out there in Oklahoma really picked a winner — after all, Tom has not only called for outlawing abortion but for the death penalty for doctors who break such a law.
For bonus points on his medical training, the good Senator readily admits having sterilized women without their consent and to doing the same to “lots of” underaged women. Nice.
