'You are my base'

Colleague jedmunds at Pandagon, and a couple of readers are buzzing about this one (via the most excellent Jame Hamsher at firedoglake).

Michael Scanlon, former aide to Tom DeLay’s best buddy Jack Abramoff, doesn’t seem to like the folks that butter his and the Chimp’s bread. Look at this bit of cheeky wisdom about the fundy “base:”

“The wackos get their information through the Christian right, Christian radio, mail, the internet and telephone trees,” Scanlon wrote in the memo, which was read into the public record at a hearing of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee. “Simply put, we want to bring out the wackos to vote against something and make sure the rest of the public lets the whole thing slip past them.” The brilliance of this strategy was twofold: Not only would most voters not know about an initiative to protect Coushatta gambling revenues, but religious “wackos” could be tricked into supporting gambling at the Coushatta casino even as they thought they were opposing it.

…Scanlon confessed the source code of recent Republican electoral victories: target religious conservatives, distract everyone else, and then railroad through complex initiatives.

As the DKos diary on this notes, this is the GOP playbook. As we all knew, the fundies are played for chumps, riling them up about abortion and homos, and using their effective response to direct mail and inflammatory ads to generate an army of wild-eyed get-out-the-vote troops.

You AmTaliban true believers herd nicely — perfect GOP sheeple. A big air kiss to ya, Dobson, Falwell, Bauer and the rest…
