The Empty Wig has dirty campaign ca$h
Before/after: Surgically preserved Elizabeth Dole (a.k.a. “Empty Wig”, “Sugar Lips” or “The Joker”).
The Dole North Carolina Victory Committee has a few problems that Tom DeLay would be familiar with. An audit that found Sugar Lips’s campaign failed to disclose the occupation or employer’s name of 29 percent of its individual contributions during the second half of 2002.
However the bigger problem is $81K of tainted cash that filled the Empty Wig’s campaign coffers. (News and Observer):
Federal auditors said a campaign committee for U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole, R-N.C., should return $81,320 in unlawful corporate contributions from her 2002 campaign, but the committee insists a convicted felon who cooked the books should be held responsible.
Earl Allen Haywood pleaded guilty last year to mail fraud after prosecutors said he stole more than $174,000 from two Dole campaign committee accounts. Haywood’s plea deal requires him to make restitution.
A federal audit of the Dole North Carolina Victory Committee, a joint fund-raising effort between Dole and the North Carolina Republican Party that Haywood helped manage, determined that it had deposited 31 checks received from the general funds of corporations. Such donations are unlawful.
The review by Federal Election Commission auditors released Tuesday said the Victory Committee “bears the responsibility for the return of the prohibited contributions.” The committee also could bear the consequences of violating the law.
As you can see, Dole’s shills are trying to pin the blame on a crooked campaign flunkie, but the FEC doesn’t play games. From its report:
Regardless of Mr. Haywood’s reputation, in the opinion of the Audit Staff, the lack of basic internal controls (e.g. separation of duties) and oversight by DNCVC created an environment that contributed to the misappropriation of funds and the misreporting to the Commission.
Now I know why Elizabeth Dole provides such sh*tty constituent services. Her office/campaign is so disorganized — and apparently corrupt — that they can only deal with one issue at a time, in this case, self-preservation.
