CBS rejects UCC ad – AGAIN

CBS is refusing to run a 30-second television ad from the United Church of Christ because its all-inclusive welcome has been deemed “too controversial.” (Advocate):

Televison network CBS is again balking at a pro-gay commercial from the United Church of Christ, saying it amounts to “advocacy” and therefore cannot be aired because it runs counter to a network policy against advocacy ads. Last year the network refused to air the ad, in which bouncers are shown refusing gays and lesbians entry to a large church, followed by a welcoming message from UCC.

After a recent meeting with high-level CBS executives, UCC president Ron Buford said it appeared the network would again reject the ad. “We told them that the United Church of Christ commercial was not advocating anything; rather, we are letting people know that no matter who they are, or where they are on life’s journey, they are welcome,” Buford said.

After reaching an impasse, Buford asked the executives what would have to change for the ad to be acceptable. “The executives said that it would have to become commonplace across the United States for churches to welcome gays and lesbians,” Buford said.

What kind of ass-hat logic is this? Running the ad would make it more likely that gays and lesbians would be welcome in more churches, not the other way around – if churches were welcoming, then the commercial wouldn’t be needed.

Good grief, I guess you have to appreciate the ignorant honesty, but this is bullsh*t.

The spot, by the way, says nothing about gay marriage, and nothing specifically about gays and lesbians at all — it’s about the UCC’s tolerance and extravagant welcome to anyone that wishes to worship. Even Jerry Falwell thought it was dumb not to allow it to run.

The last time around, back in November as the election neared, CBS gave an equally disgusting and inane response:

“Because this commercial touches on the exclusion of gay couples and other minority groups by other individuals and organizations,” reads an explanation from CBS, “and the fact the Executive Branch has recently proposed a Constitutional Amendment to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman, this spot is unacceptable for broadcast on the [CBS and UPN] networks.”

The ad also test-ran in the Triangle area last year, without fanfare or negative feedback — there was no outcry, in fact several gay friends of mine specifically mentioned this ad renewing their faith and exploring the UCC.
