Conceding the point

The other day I was a bit ungenerous with Professor Bainbridge regarding the outsourcing of emergency relief. I wrote:

Shorter Prof. Bainbridge

Although disaster relief is extraordinarily expensive there is no reason why someone shouldn’t make a tidy profit off of the suffering of others.

Since that time the good Professor has replied in the same post:

Update: Tbogg offers a “shorter” version of this post:

Although disaster relief is extraordinarily expensive there is no reason why someone shouldn’t make a tidy profit off of the suffering of others.

So here’s my take on Tbogg: Even though disaster relief is hard and complex, let’s leave the suffering victims to the mercies of incompetent government bureaucrats who couldn’t hack in the private sector and have no incentive to do their job well. Which one is the compassionate one?

As someone who has always worked in the private sector, I have not walked in the tassled loafers of Professor Bainbridge whose career has taken him from state-funded university to state-funded university with a brief stop at Harvard and a fellowship at a putative think tank.

I bow to your experience and superior intellect, good sir.
