Gay channel LOGO launches Thursday and it's got advertisers

Expect the Reich to come down hard not only on Subaru, but also on LOGO‘s other inaugural sponsors Miller Lite, Motorola, Tylenol PM, Lions Gate Films, and Showtime, all lined up for the channel, as it launches — and available in 10 million homes. Unfortunately, my area isn’t going to be part of the launch, but we’ve got people calling in to ask for it. Logo will be offered on basic cable systems, so unlike other pay-gay channels, there will be restrictions on language and sexual explicitness, something that will not deter the AmTaliban from foaming at the mouth and calling for boycotts.

MTV Networks’ Logo has signed on a raft of new charter advertisers in advance of its Thursday launch.

…Miller Lite will serve up the very first commercial spot on Logo, as the beer brand will stand as the exclusive sponsor of the net’s inaugural telecast (The Evolution Will Be Televised, June 30, 9:00-10:30 p.m.).

Motorola will be a presenting sponsor of Logo’s coverage of the 16th Annual GLAAD Awards, while Tylenol PM has bought spots in the telecast as well. Lions Gate will use the network to promote its upcoming feature film Happy Endings, which opens in theaters nationwide July 15.

Exercising a little in-house corporate synergy, Showtime will turn to the newcomer to pump up the series finale of Queer as Folk, as well as the series premiere of Weeds. In addition to tune-in messages for the departing series, Logo will present a 30-minute one-off titled VH1 Goes Inside Queer as Folk, and will run a number of tune-in spots driving viewers to the special.

As I mentioned in an earlier post about my effort to call Time Warner Cable to ask for LOGO, the target number of requests that must be reached to add a channel to your local roster is arbitrary.

A Spanish-language channel was recently added to the roster here after only 1200 requests, and was added only 3 weeks later. However, the customer rep for TWC doesn’t know what the threshold might be for LOGO – it’s based on whatever formula TWC deems will make it profitable to add the channel (contact TWC (call 1-866-4TWCNOW).
